Welcome to Tangalle, a hidden gem on Sri Lanka’s southern coast, where sun-kissed beaches, vibrant culture, and incredible wildlife encounters await.

Sri Lanka’s southern coast is a treasure trove of pristine beaches, and Tangalle is a coastal gem that offers an unforgettable family adventure. With its golden sands, turtle-watching excursions, and the laid-back vibes of Hiriketiya Beach, Tangalle is the perfect destination for a three-day family getaway.

The tropical breeze and the soothing sound of the Indian Ocean greet your family upon arrival in Tangalle. The town is a charming mix of culture and coastal beauty, with friendly locals and a relaxed atmosphere.

Where to Stay with Kids

Tangalle offers a range of family-friendly accommodations, from beachfront resorts to cosy guesthouses. Choose a place that suits your family’s needs and offers easy access to the beach, but be aware that the summer months (June-July-August) are considered a low season in the south, so many accommodations and restaurants are closed. The top season here begins in September when east coast beaches fall into low season. We picked Palm Paradise Cabanas & Villas Beach Resort Tangalle on Goyambokka Beach. It is a lovely place with peacocks running around the premises.

DAY 1: Turtle Beach at Night

Tangalle is renowned for its pristine beaches, and we couldn’t wait to start our journey at the Rekawa Turtle Conservation Project. This unique experience is perfect for families and nature enthusiasts alike.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we embarked on a magical moonlit adventure. At least we’ve pictured it like that; it was cloudy and on the verge of a tropical storm😊. The conservationists here work tirelessly to protect nesting sea turtles, and we were lucky to witness a nesting event! Standing in awe, we watched as a massive sea turtle laid eggs on the sandy shore and baby turtles made their way to the sea on the other part of the beach.

Tip: Never flash a turtle while nesting. The guards will have a special red light, so please follow their lead while there.

DAY 2: Hiriketiya Beach

Hiriketiya is a picturesque crescent-shaped bay known for its gentle waves, making it an ideal spot for families to relax and play in the water, and it is just a short drive from Tangalle.

Your kids can build sandcastles, splash in the shallows, or try bodyboarding. While they enjoy the beach, you can unwind in a beachfront café and savour fresh seafood and tropical drinks.

The beach is dotted with surf schools, making it easy for beginners to ride their first waves and further back at the entrance to the bay, there are some more demanding waves for experienced surfers.

We stayed here for a couple of hours, drinking cold beer and coke in the palm shade while watching surfers trying their best and making plans about our own board adventure that awaited us at Arugam Bay.

Day 3: Goyambokka Beach

Hidden Gem Goyambokka Beach is the epitome of tranquillity. Its untouched beauty and calm waters make it ideal for families seeking a peaceful day by the sea. The beach was just a few steps away from our villa, so we spent our morning playing with frisbee and jumping into waves. We were utterly alone on this gorgeous beach full of serenity.

We explored nearby coves and discovered a hidden natural swimming pool between the rocks. It was like a secret paradise; the kids loved exploring the tide pools and observing the vibrant marine life.

✓ Tips:

  • Pack Essentials: Sunscreen, hats, and beach toys are essential for a family beach adventure.
  • Turtle Tour Timing: Ensure you check the timings for the turtle-watching tours in advance, as they usually start after sunset.
  • Respect Nature: Teach your kids the importance of keeping the beaches clean and not disturbing nesting turtles.
  • Local Cuisine: Encourage your kids to try local Sri Lankan dishes like seafood curries, hoppers, and tropical fruits.

This is the blog about traveling trips that we have always dreamt of. My wife and I decided to continue our lives the way we have always wanted, even after our kids were born. We met during our student years, working at the biggest cinema multiplex in Ljubljana, Slovenia. We have both studied to become teachers, which we became a few years after we met each other. Since then my wife Tina continues to work as teacher while I went in completely opposite direction. We got married in 2007 and after two years we had our beautiful boy Svit. In 2012 we were blessed with a lovely daughter named Nia, preemie born in 27th week of pregnancy.
