When planning a family adventure in Sri Lanka, Ella must be on your radar. This charming town, nestled in the central highlands, offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, outdoor activities, and cultural experiences that captivate kids and adults. From climbing Ella Rock to experiencing the thrill of ziplining near Rawana Falls, Ella has something for every adventurous family.

Ella Town: A Gateway to Tranquil Beauty

Ella is a small town surrounded by rolling hills, lush tea plantations, and mist-covered mountains. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, making it an ideal destination for families looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. When we first visited this place, it was raining most of the time, but this time around, we had all the luck in the world. We did the Little Adams Peak hike then, so our goal was Mount Ella this time. We’ve also decided to surprise our kids with ziplining, but sadly, Nia was 2 kg underweight, so she had to pass this adventure.

Exploring Ella with Kids

Ella is an incredibly family-friendly destination, offering a range of activities that your kids will love. Here are some highlights:

DAY 1: The Nine Arches Bridge

It was still before noon when we reached Ella from Haputale. Since it was too early to check in at our lovely guesthouse, our driver suggested we stop and visit the iconic bridge on the way to our hotel. The next train crossing was scheduled to arrive in half an hour, so our timing was perfect. Last time, the rain made us leave the bridge before we could take one of Sri Lankan’s most famous photos, but this time around, we got lucky.

Located in the quaint town of Demodara, Sri Lanka, this iconic railway bridge is a captivating sight that will leave both young and old in awe.

As you approach the bridge, the lush greenery and the distant rumble of approaching trains create a sense of anticipation. The bridge, constructed during the British colonial era, stands as a testament to engineering marvels of the past. Its nine elegant arches gracefully span a deep gorge, making it a fascinating architectural wonder.

The path winds through emerald tea plantations, providing an opportunity to teach your little kids about the history of tea cultivation in Sri Lanka and the vibrant colors of the tea leaves.

It’s a waiting game once you arrive at the Nine Arches Bridge. The tourist’s eyes will light up as they hear the distant whistle of an oncoming train. The bridge comes to life as the train emerges, chugging across the bridge with a rhythmic clatter. It’s a spectacle that captures the imagination and provides an exhilarating rush.

Before you leave, indulge in local treats like fresh fruits or a sip of refreshing coconut water from nearby vendors.

DAY 2 – MORNING:  Ella Rock Adventure

Climbing Ella Rock is a must-do activity for families visiting Ella. The hike takes you through tea plantations, dense forests, and rocky terrains, offering stunning views. Kids will enjoy the sense of exploration and the reward of reaching the summit. The panoramic views of Ella Gap and the surrounding hills are simply breathtaking.

Our hike started near Kithal Ella Railway Station, 500 m further than our driver could take us.

As you ascend, the cool mountain air fills your lungs, and the rhythmic chirping of birds provides a soothing soundtrack. People working on fields and tea terraces welcomed us, waved and smiled. Our kids insisted that we didn’t need to hire a guide and could find our way to the top alone, and to all our surprise and with a bit of help from a map, we did. The trail is occasionally steep, but the reward is worth every step.

✓ Tip: Take plenty of water on the hike.

As you approach the summit, the landscape unfolds before your eyes. Vast vistas of rolling hills, tea terraces, and distant peaks stretch out in every direction. Ella Gap, a dramatic cleft in the landscape, offers a mesmerizing view of the valley below. You must pay a small fee of 900 LRK / 3 USD/adult to go beyond the wooden fence and visit both viewpoints.

At the peak of Ella Rock, you’ll find a sense of accomplishment that one can only earn through physical exertion and perseverance. It’s a moment to savor, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of Sri Lanka’s hill country.

DAY 2 – AFTERNOON: 2. Ziplining near Rawana Falls

After the hike, we returned to our guesthouse, Ella Mount View, for some coffee with the view and rest. Later on, we walked to town for some chicken and chocolate shawarma, and then it was time for our son’s zipline adrenaline adventure. This exhilarating experience takes you through the lush jungle canopy with the magnificent Rawana Falls as your backdrop. It’s a thrilling adventure that will make your kids feel like jungle explorers. We always felt perfectly safe since safety is the highest priority here, and facilities are well maintained.

Conclusion: Creating Lasting Memories in Ella

With its lush landscapes, thrilling adventures, and serene ambience, Ella is a fantastic destination for families seeking an authentic Sri Lankan experience. It’s a place where you can bond as a family, immerse yourselves in nature, and create memories that will last a lifetime. If someday we return to Sri Lanka, we are making another stop here.

This is the blog about traveling trips that we have always dreamt of. My wife and I decided to continue our lives the way we have always wanted, even after our kids were born. We met during our student years, working at the biggest cinema multiplex in Ljubljana, Slovenia. We have both studied to become teachers, which we became a few years after we met each other. Since then my wife Tina continues to work as teacher while I went in completely opposite direction. We got married in 2007 and after two years we had our beautiful boy Svit. In 2012 we were blessed with a lovely daughter named Nia, preemie born in 27th week of pregnancy.
