Day 1: Arrival in Sigiriya

Our family’s journey to the enchanting Sigiriya in Sri Lanka began with eager anticipation. As we landed at Colombo International Airport, we couldn’t help but be excited about the adventure that awaited us again. Our guide, Praveen Mendes, picked us up, and we went to our first destination – Sigiriya Rock Resort. With our two kids, we embarked on a 4-day exploration of Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its ancient rock fortress, lush greenery, and rich history.

We checked into a family-friendly resort, Royal Rock Sigiriya, nestled amidst the scenic landscapes of Sigiriya with a fantastic view over the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. The kids wasted no time diving into the pool while we three could not wait any longer to open a cold Lion Beer on the loungers.

In the evening, we had our first Sri Lankan curry for dinner. The food was terrific and affordable, setting the bar high for our future dinner choices.

Day 2 – Morning: The Pindurangala Rock Adventure

We dedicated our second day to exploring the Pindurangala Rock, an alternative and equally stunning viewpoint that offers breathtaking views of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. We’ve visited Lion Rock previously, so this was an obvious choice. We started early to avoid the midday heat and to make it a manageable climb for the kids. The ascent up the rocky terrain was a thrilling adventure for all of us, especially for our driver. We got to the top in about 30 minutes. Along the way, we were marveled at the dramatic landscapes and the rugged beauty of the Pindurangala area.

✓ Tip:

  • Ascent begins through a Buddhist temple, so dress modestly.

At the summit, the panoramic views of the Sigiriya Rock, the distant jungles, and the serene countryside took our breath away. Our kids were fascinated by the unique perspective and enjoyed a different side of Sigiriya’s beauty. Just beware that your kids stay far enough from the edge.

Day 2 – Afternoon: Cycling Back in History; A Family Adventure in Polonnaruwa

Looking for a super fun family outing that mixes history, nature, and a bit of exercise? Well, you’re in for a treat when you explore the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. We’ve been to Anuradhapura last time, so this time history lessons were planned by visiting the other ancient capital of Sri Lanka.

Polonnaruwa, a good hour drive from Sigiriya, is like a blast from the past with its ancient ruins from the 12th century. Our driver, Praveen, suggested us renting bikes and make it even more adventures. As you pedal around, your kids will be blown away by these incredible stone structures.

Polonnaruwa’s era of prosperity ended in the mid-13th century, when the city was abandoned following a series of civil wars, invasions and malaria outbreaks. The incredible ruins of the ancient city were hidden by the jungle for centuries, until they were rediscovered in the mid-1800s and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.

There’s even this rad spot called Gal Vihara, where they’ve carved huge Buddha statues right into the rocks!

Turn your bike ride into a super cool history lesson! Tell your kiddos stories about the kings who used to rule this place and explain why each thingamajig is important. They’ll soak up history while having an absolute blast.

This Polonnaruwa cycling route will begin at the Archeological Museum and then take you to 7 sites: the Palace Complex of King Nissanka, the Royal Palace of King Parakramabahu, Siva Devale No 2, the Sacred Quadrangle, Rankoth Vehera, Lankatilaka Viharaya and Gal Vihara, where they’ve carved huge Buddha statues right into the rocks!

Polonnaruwa is in the middle of nature. Keep an eye out for wildlife like monkeys, birds, and if you’re lucky, maybe even catch a glimpse of an elephant in the distance. It’s like a natural playground for young explorers.

✓ Tips:

  • Rent Some Bikes: You can easily rent bikes in Polonnaruwa, and they’ve got options for the kiddos too, with helmets and all that stuff. Plus, it’s budget-friendly, so it won’t break the bank (500 LKR / 1,5 USD/day). You won’t struggle to find somewhere to rent a bike in Polonnaruwa. There are a few places to hire at the gates of the ancient city — simply cross the road with your bike and you’re in.
  • Timing is Everything: Keep an eye on the weather and plan your ride when it’s not crazy hot. Mornings and late afternoons are perfect for a comfy pedal.
  • Pack a Picnic: Bring some grub and take a chill break among the old ruins or by the peaceful Parakrama Samudra Lake.

Day 3: Discovering Ritigala

On our third day, we discovered the mystical Ritigala Forest Monastery, a hidden gem in the Ritigala Strict Nature Reserve. A guided tour with Praveen (our guide/driver) led us through the ancient ruins, dense forests, and serene pathways of this once-thriving monastic complex. Our kids were fascinated by the historical tales and the tranquil ambience of the place. Nia also made her first of three katas that she promised her karate Sensei she would do and send back to Slovenia.

✓ Tip:

  • If you’ll go alone on this hike, take a photo of a map at the ticket boot and don’t cross the fence on the top! It is a sacred place.

We explored the meditation terraces, stone inscriptions, and tranquillity, all while surrounded by the soothing sounds of the forest. Ritigala offered a peaceful retreat from the bustling attractions, connecting us with nature and its history. We were one of the only visitors here, so we enjoyed the jungle for ourselves.

Day 4: Kaudulla National Park Safari and Farewell

We embarked on a thrilling wildlife safari in Kaudulla National Park on our final day in Sigiriya. Our guide expertly navigated the park’s dirt trails, and we were fortunate to witness a spectacular gathering of elephants by the picturesque Kaudulla Tank. The kids were excited as they observed these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Our 4-day adventure in Sigiriya was full of unforgettable moments. We bonded as a family, learned about Sri Lanka’s rich history and culture, and were awed by the natural beauty surrounding us. Sigiriya was ideal for families, blending history, nature, and warm hospitality. As we headed to Haputale, we left with gratitude for the memories we had created and a longing desire to return to this magical place one day. Sigiriya had indeed cast its spell on all of us.

This is the blog about traveling trips that we have always dreamt of. My wife and I decided to continue our lives the way we have always wanted, even after our kids were born. We met during our student years, working at the biggest cinema multiplex in Ljubljana, Slovenia. We have both studied to become teachers, which we became a few years after we met each other. Since then my wife Tina continues to work as teacher while I went in completely opposite direction. We got married in 2007 and after two years we had our beautiful boy Svit. In 2012 we were blessed with a lovely daughter named Nia, preemie born in 27th week of pregnancy.
