Ferry crossing, The journey from Mahambo to Ile Aux Nattes

Exploring the beauty of Ile Aux Nattes: Thankfully everything is better when the sun comes out and after quick breakfast, we checked out from La Pirogue and walked to area designated for loading passenger to the ferry. Of course, everything was mora-mora so even though we’ve arrived around 8am the ferry left at about 1pm. Extremely long wait on a scorching sun while watching the whole process of unloading arriving passengers and their language and then vice versa – our language and passengers to the island. Everything was done by small boat for max 20 people since the ferry can’t dock near the shore.

Finally, we were on our way for it turned out to be 4h slow (and I mean slow) crossing from the mainland Madagascar to the island of Saint Marie. Even though the weather was sunny and the sea was calm people still got seasick from the slow rocking left to right so the throwing overboard lasted the entire time.

Even from here when we were still on our way, we’ve seen what draw us here – the beautiful humpback whales that are migrating here in the months from July to November. This was our first sightseeing of this magnificent ocean creatures.

When you dream of a tropical getaway, with pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush greenery, Île Aux Nattes comes to mind. This small, idyllic island off the southeastern coast of Madagascar is a hidden gem that offers a perfect blend of tranquility and adventure. We spent three days on this paradise, staying at the charming Résidence Monique. Here’s a glimpse of our island adventure, complete with tips to help you make the most of your visit.

Arrival and First Impressions: Settling into Résidence Monique

Our journey to Île Aux Nattes began with a 15min tuk-tuk ride from the ferry terminal with the most beautiful sunset on the horizon. Then another 10 min boat ride from the southmost tip of the Saint Marie mainland of Nosy Boraha (Île Sainte-Marie) awaited us.   As we approached the island, the sight of turquoise waters gently lapping against white sandy shores instantly washed away any lingering travel fatigue. The island, small enough to circumnavigate on foot, radiated a sense of peaceful isolation, far removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

We arrived at Reisdence Monique, our home for the next two nights. The residence is a collection of cozy, rustic bungalows nestled amidst tropical gardens, just steps away from the beach runed by a married couple with a small girl who just turned 1 yo on next day. The bungalows are simple yet comfortable, providing everything you need to relax and unwind. What sets Residence Monique apart, however, is the warm hospitality of the hosts. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed like family, with smiles, delicious local cuisine, and plenty of tips on how to explore the island.

Tip:

  • Book your stay at Residence Monique well in advance, especially during peak season. The bungalows are popular with travelers seeking a more intimate, off-the-beaten-path experience, and they can fill up quickly.

Walking the Island: A Journey Through Paradise

One of the best ways to experience Île Aux Nattes is on foot. The island’s small size makes it easy to explore, and every turn reveals something new and beautiful. We spent our days wandering along sandy paths that wound through coconut groves, past traditional Malagasy huts, and along stretches of pristine beach. With no cars or noisy traffic, the only sounds were the whisper of the wind through the palm trees and the gentle waves lapping at the shore.

As we walked around the island, we stumbled upon various landmarks that added to the island’s charm. One of the most striking was the small, historic lighthouse that offers panoramic views of the surrounding ocean. From here, we could see the vibrant coral reefs just below the water’s surface, and the distant outline of Île Sainte-Marie.

Another highlight was a visit to the island’s sacred tree, an ancient banyan that locals hold in high regard. The tree’s sprawling roots and dense canopy gave it an almost mystical presence, and standing beneath it felt like stepping back in time.

Tip:

  • Take your time as you explore the island. While it’s possible to walk around the entire island in a few hours, lingering at the beaches, landmarks, and viewpoints will make your experience more fulfilling. It took us 2 hours with one break for drinks at La Maison Blanche.

Beach Bliss: Sun, Sand, and Snorkeling

Of course, no visit to Île Aux Nattes would be complete without spending ample time on its beaches. The island is surrounded by some of the most beautiful beaches we’ve seen—each one a slice of paradise. The sands are powdery white, the waters are a brilliant shade of blue, and the coral reefs just offshore teem with colorful marine life.

We spent hours simply lounging on the beach, soaking up the sun, and swimming in the warm, shallow waters. For those interested in snorkeling, the island offers plenty of opportunities to explore the underwater world. Just a short swim from the shore, we encountered vibrant coral gardens and a variety of tropical fish.

The beaches were never crowded, which made the experience feel even more special. It was easy to find a quiet spot to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the island. At times, it felt as if we had the entire island to ourselves—a rare and wonderful sensation.

Tip:

  • Bring your own snorkeling gear if possible. While some places on the island rent equipment, having your own ensures you can explore whenever the mood strikes. Also, don’t forget to bring reef-safe sunscreen to protect both your skin and the delicate marine ecosystem.

Sunset and Evenings: The Magic of Île Aux Nattes

As the day drew to a close, we were treated to some of the most breathtaking sunsets we’ve ever seen. The sky would transform into a palette of oranges, pinks, and purples, reflecting off the calm ocean waters. Watching the sunset became a daily ritual, a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.

Evenings on Île Aux Nattes are peaceful and quiet, with little to distract you from the natural sounds of the island. We spent our nights at Résidence Monique, enjoying delicious Malagasy dinners made with fresh, local ingredients. The residence doesn’t have much in the way of nightlife, but that’s precisely the point—this is a place to disconnect, relax, and enjoy the simple pleasures of island life.

Tip:

  • Bring a good book or a journal. The slow pace of life on Île Aux Nattes provides the perfect opportunity to catch up on reading or reflect on your travels. Also, consider bringing a small flashlight for nighttime walks, as the island has limited artificial lighting.

Final Thoughts: A Slice of Heaven on Earth

Our time on Île Aux Nattes was nothing short of magical. The island’s natural beauty, combined with the warm hospitality at Residence Monique, made it one of the most memorable parts of our trip to Madagascar. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a peaceful retreat, or simply a chance to experience a different way of life, Île Aux Nattes offers it all.

This is the blog about traveling trips that we have always dreamt of. My wife and I decided to continue our lives the way we have always wanted, even after our kids were born. We met during our student years, working at the biggest cinema multiplex in Ljubljana, Slovenia. We have both studied to become teachers, which we became a few years after we met each other. Since then my wife Tina continues to work as teacher while I went in completely opposite direction. We got married in 2007 and after two years we had our beautiful boy Svit. In 2012 we were blessed with a lovely daughter named Nia, preemie born in 27th week of pregnancy.
